Tim Crane

(Baritone)

Get to know Tim

What are you doing in school?
"Right now, I'm studying kinesiology. I think I'm going to use my degree to go into personal training, but I could also see myself doing research as a career."
How long have you been singing in choirs?
"The first choir I ever joined was my church choir in the third grade, which would have been 2006. The first serious choir I joined was the Maryland Boy Choir in 2008. That's when I really got into singing, so I'd have to say 2008 is when I started."
What is your favorite musical memory?
"Performing for Joe Biden is easily the most remarkable musical memory I have. Being able to meet him and other prominent people in our society was remarkable, and getting a chance to put on a show for them felt even better."
Do you have any special talents or interests outside of music?
“My greatest interests outside of music are sports and exercise  I like to stay active and I'm really competitive, so they go hand in hand. I definitely wouldn't say I'm talented at all the sports I like, but in high school I was one of the top 50 cross country runners in Maryland. That's something I was always good at.”
Who is your favorite composer?
"I hope this isn't cheating because he's really more of an arranger, but it would have to be Stacey Gibbs. He has some very good compositions, but what really turned me on to him were his gospel arrangements that we sang in my high school choir. My director was a friend of his and he came in to meet us, conduct us, and give us pointers on how to bring out the most in his pieces. Great guy and he makes great music."
Who's your favorite non-classical musical artist?
"Lake Street Dive. They're a 4-person group that formed out of a the New England Conservatory consisting of a lead singer, trumpeter, drummer, and double bassist. They have their own blend of soul, pop, and jazz that is truly unique. It's really impressive to me that they have made a sound unlike that of any pre-existing genre I can think of and done so well with it."
What song have you not been able to stop listening to?
"I've been listening to Easy by Mac Ayres constantly. I love a good voice paired with crisp rhythms, making me a huge fan of R&B, and he finds a balance between both that really does it for me for some reason."
What's your favorite book? What's it about?
"My favorite book is The Stanger by Albert Camus. It's about a man with no sense of belonging, remorse, or any other societal norm. This lack of awareness eventually gets him sentenced to death. It shows the dangers of existentialism, a philosophy that considers a person truly individual and capable of determining their own actions with no social pressure. I like that it shows the reader how much a structured society determines our actions, because we often don't realize it. "
What were you doing during the summer in middle school?
"I couldn't tell you because it was nothing important, probably going to basketball camp and the pool while playing video games in between."
What's your favorite sports team?
“The Washington Wizards. I'm a huge fan of basketball and right now they're playing a really defense-oriented style that I love. Plus they're my hometown team, so I have no choice."
If all of the appliances in your kitchen came to life, which would they elect as their leader?
“The blender, because it's really good at taking a lot of different things and making them one."
What's your favorite thing about singing in Lux?
"The people. Not only are they fun, everyone in the group is both talented and committed to the music, making it so easy to create good sounds."
What's your favorite song you've sung with Lux?
“[Bruckner's] Christus Factus Est is one of my favorites, and probably just edges out a few other really memorable ones. It's a really powerful song with a huge dynamic range, so it's just really fun to perform."
What's the most interesting fact about you?
“I'm a twin, that's kinda unique. Saying it's the single most interesting thing about me might make me seem lame, but people are always more impressed than I think they'll be when I tell them."
