Get to know KimberlyWhat are you doing in school?
"I'm a junior at Washington College in Chestertown MD, studying anthropology." How long have you been singing in choirs? “Since my sophomore year in high school, so five years." What is your favorite musical memory? "Either going to All-National choir in Nashville the fall of my junior year of high school, or All-State 2015 when I met the original Singy Thingy members and we all got snowed into the hotel before dress rehearsal." (For some context, the "Singy Thingy" was the first edition of Lux, when it was still a just a recording project.) Do you have any special talents or interests outside of music? "I draw a little bit, I write a lot, I play the ukulele, and I make a mean pot of mac and cheese." Who is your favorite composer? "I have to be stereotypical and go with [Eric] Whitacre, just because he was the first big composer I was exposed to that made me go 'hey I think I might want to do stuff like this for the rest of my life.’" Who's your favorite non-classical musical artist? "I went to a Slash concert this fall and that was pretty sick. I'm on a kick right now." What song have you not been able to stop listening to? "Black Dog by Led Zeppelin." Would you rather spend the day with Elle or Jennifer Lawrence? “Probably Ellen. Jennifer Lawrence would eat all my pizza and talk about how 'normal' she is, but Ellen and I can go do fun stuff like hand out flowers or scare Taylor Swift in the studio bathroom." Whales or trains? “Whales, because it's always been a dream of mine to ride on the back of a majestic humpback whale as it approaches the surface, and we breach the waves and fly off into the sunset, like in Fantasia 2000." What’s your favorite sports team? “…sports. I mean, probably that one with the ball. And those people that hit the ball. I don’t know, what’s the most obscure sport that no one knows about? Google says egg throwing." What's your favorite thing about singing in Lux? “That first rehearsal of a new season, when we run through each of the songs for the first time. It always gives me goosebumps to hear our voices come together. You can just hear how much we love to do this, to just make music and beauty because we possess the ability. It's really really moving." What’s your favorite song you've sung with Lux? “[Eric Whitacre’s] Sainte-Chapelle, hands down. It's been with Lux from my first season and it just continues to get better every time I hear it." If you were a cupcake, what flavor would you be? “Red velvet." What's the most interesting fact about you? "My longest 'yeah boi' was 47 seconds. I should probably think of a better one but that was the first one that popped into my head." |
Kimberly Parr is a junior at Washington College, where she studies Anthropology/Archaeology and Ethnomusicology. Kim joined Lux for their summer 2015 season - the first time Lux sang mixed repertoire together, singing with the group for five seasons. Throughout her high school career, Kim sang with the Maryland All-State Choir for three years and sang with NAfME's All-National Choir in Nashville in the Fall of 2014. When not singing in Lux, Kim can be found at the Chestertown Docks or, more likely, sneaking naps in unusual places.
